Jane Green's Cottage Remodel in Westport, CT

Jane Green's Cottage
Before
Remember Mary Kay Andrews..., well this is another Cottage Remodel done by a bestselling writer. Location, the coastal town of Westport, CT, where I once lived. You can check out my Bench Photograph @ Art.com taken at the town beach.

After
"I am not a fan of the Mcmansion, and this little cottage is a perfect example of how you do not have to tear a house down, nor does it have to be large and impressive, for it to be beautiful," Jane says, and I couldn't agree more. The Mouse House, as it is called, is now For Rent. Visit Jane Green's Blog and for a great beach read grab her book The Beach House.

Synopsis
Nan Powell is a free-spirited sixty-five-year-old widow who dearly loves her Nantucket home. But when she discovers that the money she thought would last forever is dwindling, she realizes she must make drastic changes to save her beloved house. So Nan decides to rent rooms for the summer and slowly people start moving in. And then an unexpected visitor turns all their lives upside down.

  2. I love it. Cape Cods, where ever they are, are my favorite. This shows what you can do to update an ordinary house into something stylish yet elegant. Again. I love it!

  4. Lovely! Reminds me of my aunt's former home. I always loved that little house. Sadly, the home is no longer in the family and is not well kept at all.

  5. Well I agree totally. No McMansions for me. They don't suit my wants nor my budget. This is very inspiring for someone who's first home will certainly need an overhaul. Thanks Maya

  14. I have never understood the concept of McMansions. Must be something about "keeping up with the Jones." I like cozy and small.

  18. I really enjoyed reading this post! I grew up in a neighboring town in CT, and have been to Compo beach many times. So great was my mother's love for Compo beach that we held her memorial service at Compo one cold December afternoon.

The house is charming. I finished reading her most recent book when on vacation recently; it was not my favorite of hers, but enjoyable.

I have been driving by this house all summer on my way to work at Compo Beach. I have been fascinated by the perfect cape renovation (I didn't know one even existed). I would really love to see the interior. I was happy to see a web site posted in front of the house and am very happy to see that Jane Green has done this renovation. I met you when your garden was on the Hidden Garden Tour in Westport before you moved to Litchfield County.
I finally read one of your books, Beach House on a plane to L.A. The young gal next to me had read every book of yours but not this one, and I told her how much I loved it. Are you the one building the house my friends the Tallman Building Co. are building across the street? Enjoy!

  23. Thank you all for such lovely words, and I LOVE this blog - everything I love about living by the sea. To Carole - Martha came to see the Mouse House last week and loved it, so yes, she approved! And to Anonymous, there are pictures of the interior on www.mousehouse.us. We are not building the Swedish castle across the street - hoping to start building a little further back shortly... Have a great summer, all...
