The Matter of the Header

I love Dale's Header (from last month). It's so creative, fun and inviting, and I'd like to have something similar for this place. After all the header is the curb appeal of my "cyberspace" home, and I quote Lisa @ The Lisa Porter Collection: "A visitor’s first impression of your home is often made from the sidewalk or stoop. You want it to say, “Happy you are here!”

Now I'd love to known, what where the thoughts behind your header?

  1. My header is full of photos of my home or things that I've blogged about. I wanted it to be colorful and tell a bit about me.

  2. I wanted our blog header to be colourful and fun :-) Victoria was apprehensive about having caricatures of us in the header, but our blog designer (Katie Lane) did a fantastic job capturing our personalities in the caricatures she created. Plus she made us slim and sexy!! Yeah!! :-D

I think your blog header should reflect who you are and what you love :-)

I didn't get seasick at all on the boat :-) I love being in and on the water -- I should have been a fish!!

  3. I started with a large picture....which I loved...but it was too big and didn't cut down well. So then I posted bunches of ideas and asked readers to help pick...they did...the one I am using now was majority vote!

I like how you change yours around all the time!

  4. When I started my blog I was happy with my header but now that I have looked at lots of blogs I realize my header needs help!

  5. Dale's header is great. There are a lot of great ones out there. I don't have the slightest problem with your seagulls on the beach. The surfer in me wants a very narrow (short?) header, just enough to know where I am. I'm most anxious to see the content, not the header.

  6. Maya,
Thanks for stopping by. I like the idea of changing my heading according to what I'm talking about that day or that week. Plus as you know I have a 3 column layout which only allows for smaller pictures and makes all the critical, anonymous readers nervous. The header allows me to play with a larger photo. Hopefully it's one that is enjoyable to everyone.
I loved your ground level view of the pebbles on the beach...that was my favorite.

  7. Hi Maya, my header is usually a photo from home or my local beach. I'd love to know more about headers and how to do them but so far I haven't learnt any other way than to add text to my photo and then post it!!

  9. I've tried several headers and have changed with seasons etc. The one I like best is the one I have now. It's five photos, of our home, done in black and white and color reduced. I used a narrow frame and embellishments. I think I'll keep it, for awhile.

  10. Hey Maya
As you might remember I changed my header regularly when I first started blogging.. then I went to no pic.. and mostly it has stayed that way. It depends on what I am posting I guess. I like your change of headers.. keeps it interesting. Have a great weekend. x Julie

  11. I so want to change my header. I'm new to blogging and to setting up a website. I would like to do a collage. But I don't know how to do it. I recently got photoshop and haven't a clue how to use it LOL! Tried doing a collage in panoramic mode and it wouldn't let me do it. I guess I'll buy a program for photo dummies instead.

  12. I just changed my header this morning! I posted a photo of my dollhouse when I first got it. I want to remember how it looked so I can see progress!
I would love to know how to make a collage, but that is way beyond my computer skills!

  13. I'm still working on mine. After I figured out a little bit about the html stuff I decided to try to do my own bloghead and layout. I came up with the one I have now, but I'm not totally happy with it... So hopefully I'll get to change it soon.

I want my blogheader to convey all the things that make my life happy and sweet... not easy that one!

  16. Oops! Me again. I posted and then saw a typo. I will try again.

Being a relatively new blogger, till I get my sea legs I have chosen to keep my header simple. I do like the fresh simplicity of my header. I have chosen to concentrate instead on the decorative aspects of my postings. But, I do understand the need for a great header statement, and there are so many wonderful examples out there.

  18. Mine's been through several awful transitions. Right now it's ok, an inkling of where I want to go but nowhere near finished. I love the look of Dales's header, such fun... I'm so glad there are bloggers out there who do that for us.

Simpler is best for my blog... I think.
    I dunno... maybe.

  19. I don't know why, but headers are important to me when I visit others. I've asked myself why time and time again. Because that seems so silly. But I'm very visual and I like a header to tell me "who a person is." If I like the header, I will scroll down to get to know them. It sounds even sillier now that I've typed it. For my header, I keep wanting to try photographing different areas of my house. But over and over again I seem to end up photographing the same table with a centerpiece. But looking different. That and a title and that's about all I know how to do!

  20. Turns out that we all do give the header some thoughts, more than less actually..., and I also don't seem to be alone with the ongoing search for the "perfect" header, or say (self) expression. Thank you so much for answering my question!!

  21. oh to have a header with "seadream" studio in it! That would mean my workshop was at the beach right? A girl can only dream.

  22. what is behind my header is my desire to live near water. It never goes away. Its nothing something we can afford but it my dream of coming across something that is affordable to us,,remains.

  23. I love my header. My darling husband figured out how to make it rotate, so now every time you click, you get a different favorite beachy picture. If you are html savvy, you could do something like that.

  25. Thanks for sharing my blog header. I am a graphic designer so I have the luxury of changing out my banner whenever I feel like whipping up a new one. In designing banners(for myself or clients) I try to reflect the site's spirit. My banner is colorful and fun, which is pretty much how I think of myself!

  26. ...like the color of my hair and the furniture in my house, i change my header often! LOL!!!...however, my last header has been there a little while...to me it suggests, let's take a walk along the shore with our pants rolled up arm in arm and laugh 'til our sides hurt! xo, mickey

  27. My header is a closeup pic of a collage piece that I did called "so young, the queen" I like it for now, but find myself wanting to change it now and then.

  28. hi girl!
I change my header probably 2x a month, along with colors and fonts, ect. I have so many excellent photos I have taken of the water, I want to share share share. I have never used black, however except for this photo I have on my header now, AND I LOVE IT! What do you think?

I am from the school of thought where you want it to reflect what you are all about, your blog, life, loves...ect. Since I am so many things it get changes alot. Sometimes I think I should pay someone to make me a fancy one, but then I think better...Im a free spirit, and so is the blog. I guess...
I do love yours, by the way..so much excellent info and awesome links.
    xo from the beach!!
