Sigrid Olsen loses 2400 Square Feet

Sigrid Olsen Studio
Fashion designer and mixed-media artist Sigrid Olsen used to work in this airy and bright studio at her suburban home in Hamilton, MA.

Now she works here. In the kitchen of her cottage at Rocky Neck, a seaside art colony in Gloucester, MA (come tour it @ Completely Coastal).

After a double mastectomy and losing her job at Liz Claiborne last year, Olsen decided to go back to her roots as an artist. So she and her husband sold their 3600 square foot home and moved into their quaint 1,200 square foot summer cottage by the harbor inlet, which consists of combined living, work and gallery space all on one floor above the garage. A new beginning at age 54!

Then..., you don't want to miss Rhonda's cookie book giveaway over at Shellbelle's Tiki Hut. You can enter the draw till 10/22. Good Luck!

  3. Hi Maya, thanks for the shout out on my giveaway!

I love the work table in the first photo, I'd like to build shelves under mine and this has given me an idea.

  5. I remember this article...quite good. Sometimes, having less space is freeing. For me, I have learned to contain my mess...just a little.
It's another way of being creative.

ps thanks for your kind comments. We're hopeful that Julie will do well with her store.

  6. You know, that place would be much more inspiring and soothing to go live in. And it's all about location, right across from the dock....so lucky!

  9. I'm a small space gal. I wouldn't know what to do with all that room. My house probably has around 2000 square feet, all told, which is far from small. But I spend virtually all my time in a couple of rooms. I could easily live in less than 1000 square feet and be happy! She'll probably get more done. Not as much house to take care of!

  11. I read this in the NYT on Sunday- What a life-change... I think for the better, don't you? The next trip to the So. Shore of MA, I'm going to try to stop at her gallery. LOVE this blog-as I am also a lover of all things coastal.
