The Movie House Nights in Rodanthe is on the Move. But the couple who purchased it are not the only people who are so in love with a house that they are willing to relocate it.
Last year Debbies Francouer's new home was put on a barge bound for it's new lot just a couple hundred yards from the beach in Mattapoisett, MA. It wasn't a rescue like the Rodanthe house, but rather a sentimental affair, a homecoming to the neighborhood where Debbie grew up in. You can read the full story

... their beloved Lieb house, a beach cottage designed by Robert Venturi, that became widely studied as a model of modernism, arrived without damage (not even a scratch) on its new spot, next to the main house in Glen Cove on Long Island, saved from being torn down. You can read the article

Great job! It is easier to do this now, cause it's similar to putting together a modular home. The rigging equipment is so much better than it used to be. I've read about people trying to move a house on logs and using plow horses lol! But in the good old days, they didn't understand the word can't :D

ReplyDeleteI love stories with happy endings, both for the people and the houses. I laughed when the filmmaker said, "It looks like it’s been unwrapped from a box.” What a great gift, I'd love to have a beach house to unwrap!

True Story: The house next to my parent's on the bay in Ocean City, NJ was moved on a barge about 10 yrs ago. They worked all day moving the house towards the water and just at the end it got stuck on one of the pilings and it wouldn't budge. The builders asked if we had any soap? I went in and got them a bar of soap and they applied it to the piling and it helped the house pass on.
ReplyDeleteThe house was taken to Barnegat to sit in the bay for a long time before they got the proper approvals. Glad these folks have a new home!

That's really cool that they can do that! I used to joke around with my parents that I wanted my Victorian house to be relocated, but for that house it would be a tad difficult since we have a basement and everything, lol. But imagine if it was rebuild and movable, that would be awesome!

She is a doll! and so inspirational...if you do facebook she is Kathy Kohner Zuckerman ... she likes to meet new folks, so friend her...Her dad wrote the story about her life as a girl surfer in Malibu! I loved Sally Field as Gidget...
As Kathy would say... I'm "over the moon" that my son is in his new house. We went to newport RI for the fiest time last summer....we had a great time...sailed and took in the mansions!

You know, house moving alway ALWAYS amazes me. I remember a few years ago one early morning I was up watching the local (seattle) news and they were reporting on a barge with a huge farmhouse going through the Puget Sound to its new location. AMAZING. As is this story.

Just wanted to let "Oceans Dream" know that you can move a house with a basement under it. My father moved houses for 20+ years before he started working in the coal mines here in Kentucky.
