"I surfed at Waikiki on my 60th birthday, but I don't ride the waves much anymore. I spend most of my time up at Duke's Malibu, a restaurant with a surfer theme. I'm a hostess there, and I love every minute of it," says real and grown up Gidget Kathy Kohner Zuckerman in an interview with Coastal Living.
Within ten years of the Gidget movie (1959), based on the book written by Kathy's father, two sequels, a television series, and a telemovie were produced. In 1965, Sally Field played Gidget in an ABC television series that was canceled after one season, being later followed by telemovies with the adult Gidget..., I have yet to see one of these!
Hey Maya. I remember Gidget. I wanted to be Gidget although I had freckles and sunburn!! I cannot believe the series was only on for 1 year. I feel as if I spent years of my childhood watching Gidget. Must of been all re-runs! Thanks... this is a lot of fun memories! Julie

That's great that the original Gidget is still surfing at 60. Is her husband's name Moondoggy by any chance...LOL
ReplyDeleteThanks for bringing back great memories!
What a cool post. I used to love Gidget when I was little! My mom used to watch her when it 1st came out & got a kick out of me watching it too. Great post!
ReplyDeleteLove Gidget movies....who could forget Moondoggie? Thanks for the memories.
ReplyDeleteHugs,
LeAnn:)
I never knew that! I always watched Gidget and never knew it was based on a real life Gidget... That's cool that her Dad wrote the book.

That is just awesome. I hope I'm as cool as her when I'm 60.
ReplyDeleteOh you should totally see Gidget. It is the best! That is amazing that she has surfed all of these years!

ReplyDeleteI just have to say... sweet pink bikini :-) Girly, but not "in your face". Sally was a great Gidget.
ReplyDeleteI know I saw The Flying Nun at some point. But barely in my memory. Don't recall just when it was. I'm not good with these events! Sally Field has done some great work in her lifetime!

What a great story! I loved Gidget...Don't forget that Sandra Dee played Gidget in films. Along with Bobby Darren.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this. I love Gidget!
ReplyDeleteI remember Gidget re-runs, don't think I saw the movie, though.
ReplyDeleteSurfing at 60, wow!
I love this; I use the idea of surfing as a metaphor in a lot of my work as an artist.
Terrific photos; I'd never seen the real Gidget before your post.
